Today`s children are tomorrow`s citizens, every parent should deeply understand the fact that children are real asset if they are healthy and children are the greatest burden if they fall sick. Globally WHO,UNICEF , and many health care organizations are still struggling to make a healthy platform where every child can live with prosperity, health and peace.
Nearly 10 million children under the age of five die every year – more than 1000 every hour. The loss of a child is a tragedy – families suffer and human potential is wasted.
If we turn the pages of fact sheet, WHO has come out with report as follows.
The risk of death of a child is highest in the first month of life and thereby it reduces to 50% by one year and 90% by 5 years from birth. The children can die easily in the first month if there are high risk category, unsafe birth, forced and prolonged labor, birth asphyxia,
Once the child crosses 1 year age common causes of mortality are pneumonia, HIV, diarrhea and malaria.
4 Million children die worldwide within 1 month of life( neonatal period) .A report says 50% mortality can be controlled in the first month itself by essential newborn care, quality antenatal care during pregnancy , safe delivery practices , hygiene and very important warmth after birth, and feeding in the first hour of life.
Pneumonia is the largest single cause of death in the under fives .Nearly ¾ cases die from the prevalent 15 countries .It is naturally because of unsafe deliveries, air pollution, and malnutrition, respiratory infections which are left untreated .
Diarrheal diseases are a leading cause of sickness and death among children in developing countries. Exclusive breastfeeding helps prevent diarrhoea among young children. Treatment for sick children with Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) and zinc supplements is safe, cost-effective and saves lives. The lives of more than 50 million children have been saved in the last 25 years.
A child dies every 30 seconds in African region and it is the leading cause of death in that region
Over 90% of children with HIV are infected through mother-to-child transmission, which is preventable with the use of antiretroviral, as well as safer delivery and feeding practices. An estimated 2.3 million children under 15 years of age are living with HIV, and every day more than 1400 are newly infected.
About 20 million children under five worldwide are severely malnourished, which leaves them more vulnerable to illness and early death. Around three-quarters of these children can be treated with “ready-to-use therapeutic foods”
Female infanticidism(killing female children) made the gender ratio of male :female of 100:87.Which means for every 100 males there are only 87 females around the globe, but it vary geographically.
Child health is improving, but serious challenges remain to achieve, global goals to reduce deaths. Still, about two-thirds of child deaths are preventable through access to practical, low-cost interventions, and effective primary care up to five years of age.
High risk children like preterm, low birth weight children are 70% more risk of disease and death than normal children.
